The Wit and Wisdom of TechCrunch

TechCrunch: "at the end of the day, people want to consume content without the friction of having to sit down in front of a television" TechCrunch is silly.

"The end of the day" is the perfect time to relax on the couch and check out some tv. Maybe I'll do some email or blogging at the same time. What's the deal with declaring the death and end of things like newspapers and tv shows?

No Blog for You!

Wit: "At Ritual Coffee, the hand-crafted sign by the register now reads, 'Please, no blogging in line.'"

My 1,000th Twitter

I didn't plan it that way but my 1,000th Twitter update ended up being about flooring. That's hott! I wonder how long it took me to make 1,000 blog posts. Too hard to figure out. Nevertheless, there you have it.

Good Use of Blogspot: Let Wenka Retire!

This site is not calling for an end to primate research, it's just calling to let this chimpanzee retire after 52 years of being tested on. Is that too much to ask? I just signed the petition.

Release Wenka & the Elder Chimpanzees: "The United States is the biggest user of chimpanzees in research - an estimated 1,300. Many have been in research for decades. The oldest known is Wenka - she is 52. After nearly 50 years, it's time for her and the other elders to retire so they can spend their remaining days in peace and comfort."

He Calls Himself a 'Twit'

Giles Turnbell on Twitter: "It’s quicker and more succinct than reading people’s blogs; it’s immediate, intimate, and informal. It’s fun. Your pals in your pocket."

Ted Speaks Out

Dogster Inc. Company Blog: "If that opinion violates the 'Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act' then come and get us" Ted's speaking out against the fact that we're not allowed to speak out about cruelty to puppies or other animals—doing so, even in a blog post, brands you a terrorist under the new Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act. Don't Bite Down Too Hard on 'Indie Corporate'

In a recent blog post called Knowing when to hold 'em Ev points out that relatively young web properties adopted by large corporate entities have grown extremely robust with very little help from their parents. He cited Yahoo!'s Flickr and Google's Blogger as prime examples.

Ev goes on in his very next post to say that he likes it when people say they "work at Flickr" rather than at Yahoo! and recalls that at Blogger we used to refer to this phenomenon as "indie corporate" within the walls of the Googleplex.

It occurs to me that these two points go together like the sweet and salty taste of a tooth-breaking piece of peanut brittle. When you are acquired, ignored, and desperate for more resources what do you do? You form a tribe, hang on to your identity, and rock the indie corporate vibe.

As long as your acquired product team maintains black sheep status in a big company you are indie corporate because your subculture becomes one of your precious resources. Maybe that's why folks like Dunstan say they are going to work for Flickr instead of Yahoo! and that's why if you get hired to work on Orkut you say "I'm going to join my Stanford pals at Google."

NBC Launches "DotComedy"

"Building on its rich comedy heritage and ready to establish a new generation of classic humor" NBC Universal just announced its new comedy broadband channel, DotComedy.

Dear Jason Shellen,

For years your shellen.com logo has been bugging me ever-so-slightly. It is kinda pixely but it's also blurry. So which is it supposed to be?

before

after

Well, I finally made the decision for you and made it pixely. You don't have to use it but if you do, your traffic will increase by at least one vistit per day. I though I would warn you in case you want to put some AdSense up on there.

Sincerely,
Biz Stone

Running with Cell Phones

This NYT piece about marathon runners who use cell phones is interesting. Some runners say calling folks after every mile dilutes the experience and that they should make calls after they cross the finish line. That may well be true, but how about this: What if your phone could automatically send out info about you and your progress to the web? Then your friends and relatives could tune in or sign up to get these progress reports and you would know they were all getting them. That would be cool.
