Search Google's AdWords - Type a keyword to see what ads are currently running that include those words. If a word has not been purchased, a charity will be displayed. Nice.
The Web Diarist as Pitchman "Under a deal she made last September with Richards Interactive, [a blogger] received a free Nokia phone and a stipend to offset phone charges. In exchange, she had to supply a permanent link to Nokia [and] "write about it every once in a while." Thanks, Kingsley.

When I got home last night I discovered a small folded document had been slipped under my apartment door. It was from a special agent with the US Department of Defense, Investigative Service. It said “It is necessary that I speak with you in connection with an individual’s security background investigation in support of our national defense.” It had a neighbor’s name on it. It turned out to be a normal thing but at first I thought I was being recruited by SD6. Nice, I want a Ford Focus!

Matt explains why there are Google ads on Metafilter: "When google asked me if was game for it, I weighed all the drawbacks: the 'selling out,' the look of more textads, some members protesting, etc, against finally getting some sort of steady financial support to keep the site alfoat longer than I would have originally." I like it. Good stuff.
Microdoc News on Google: "Behind the minimalist home page of everyone's favorite search engine, Google, lies 382,000 web pages." Apple only has 125,000.

I went to my friend Alex's art show today. Did he have his hair styled as pigtails with a purple bejewelled barret? Yes. Is he still a cool guy who paints fantastic murals? Yes. Was there also a guy named Glen from H&R Block attending because he somehow heard about it? Yes. Glen is only seasonal right now but he would like to be full time. H&R, hook Glen up--the guy sneaks into local art shows on the weekend. He's cool.
UrbanDictionary's definition of Blog:

n. (short for weblog) 1. summary of webmaster activities in the form of a journal, hosted on a website
2. short writings on the internet of poor quality

That second definition would make a good title for a blog. Or a book about blogs... Hmm.

English Sans French | csmonitor.com "Let's get to the heart of the matter thing: A huge big percentage of the words in modern today's English are of - gasp! - French origin beginnings. What if, as a result of the current diplomatic dispute today's falling out between lands, the French demand ask for their words back? We could all be linguistic hostages captives."

'Children of Dune' took Wellesley native a year of work: "Sarandon was interested in 'Children of Dune' when contacted, but locking her up for the part meant a meeting with Yaitanes. Since the director was already deep into the film's production in Prague, getting away to Los Angeles was out of the question. Instead, a telephone interview was arranged. It was a simple-enough solution - except for the fact that Yaitanes had planned to propose to his girlfriend, Genna, on the night for which the call had been arranged."
Boston Herald: Greg Yaitanes on Children of Dune: "I thought of it as something like The Godfather in the future." Nice!

Children of Dune has taken over The Internet Movie Database! COD is coming. Not the fish. The Scifi miniseries.
I missed this on my birthday: CNN.com - Blogging goes mainstream - Mar. 10, 2003 "Other notables seeking to capitalize on the rise of the Web's so-called "Blogosphere" include Terra Lycos, America Online and Google." Must have been all those margaritas.

Mar 12, 2003

Strange coincidence? It think not. Watch Greg Yaitanes talk about his upcoming Children of Dune (click scifi link above) tomorrow on The Biz. That's right, it's called "The Biz." Where's my royalties at? Women be shoppin'.
Business Blog Answer Man: "How can a blog benefit my business? Is it true that blogs get high search engine positions without expensive and uncertain search engine optimization? Will blogs replace email marketing? Is there an email equivalent of a blog? Will my boss laugh when I tell him that I want to blog for the company? Isn't blogging just another Internet fad like personal websites? Blogs are a hot item these days and businesses are asking questions. The Blog Answer Man is available to answer your business-blog (b-blog) questions." Fee based phone sessions are also available. What? He's a businessman!

Custom Blogoshperes: For years I’ve wished there was such a thing as Blogger-in-a-Box™—an easy way for companies or groups to launch their very own version of Blogger (SimPyra?) Now I’m thinking it would be really cool if you could install a custom Blogosphere at a company or site. Measure the intellectual climate of your workforce.
